Mamoru ‘Mark’ Horiuchi was a member of GARO, a Tokyo trio formed in 1970 alongside Tomiaki ‘Tommy’ Hidaka and Masumi "Vocal" Ohno. Based loosely on the concept of Crosby Stills Nash, the group featured three composers who all took lead vocals and played guitar. They were signed to Mushroom Records, Columbia Japan’s rock label, and having released three critically acclaimed rock albums, had a breakthrough in 1973 with a song "Gakuseigai-no-Kissaten" which became number one on the Japanese national charts. Subsequent singles also reached the top of the Japanese charts.
The group broke up in 1975 after releasing 7 studio albums and one live album. Following a couple of solo albums, Mark Horiuchi left the music business altogether in the mid 70s. However, following the release of a 11 CD/DVD box set of the back catalogue of the band from Sony in 2006, Mark began performing again and released an independent EP in 2010 from which this song, Stranger in the City, was taken. The folk-rock song bursting with the nostalgia and the driving riffs signals Mark’s return on a top form to the glorious 1970s days.
